Our Values
Our Yoga classes and Yoga Teacher Training Courses in Varkala, Kerala focus entirely on traditional Hatha Yoga and Hatha Vinyasa. Over the years, we’ve refined our methods into a clear blend of traditional wisdom and modern, practical teaching tools. By committing deeply to one lineage, we prioritize expertise over variety, giving you precise guidance, profound understanding, and the confidence to develop a strong, lifelong practice.
About Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is the oldest and most traditional form of yoga. The foundation from which all modern styles have evolved, such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Iyengar, etc. The word Hatha means sun (Ha) and moon (Tha), symbolizing balance between strength and softness, effort and ease.
Hatha Yoga practices focus on holding postures longer, and moving with awareness, rather than simply flowing from pose to pose. This allows each student to feel the depth of every asana, connect with their breath, and experience stillness through mindful effort.
Through this balance, body and mind align, and yoga becomes more than movement. It becomes meditation in action.
About Hatha Vinyasa Yoga
Hatha Vinyasa Yoga is a bridge between the stillness of Hatha and the flow of Vinyasa. It combines the grounding, alignment-based approach of Hatha Yoga with the mindful transitions and rhythm of Vinyasa. In this style, each movement is guided by breath, creating a smooth yet steady flow between postures. Unlike fast-paced Vinyasa classes, our approach at Pranam Yoga Joseph keeps the intelligence and precision of Hatha, allowing time to feel and understand each pose, while still cultivating the meditative continuity of movement. It is both dynamic and introspective: a practice where strength meets softness, and where breath becomes the link between body, awareness, and inner stillness.
Through Hatha Vinyasa, we learn that flow is not about speed. It is about presence.
Guru TA Raman Asan
Born in the early 1930s in Fort Kochi, our Guru began his path with a deep passion for improving the physical wellbeing of the people in his hometown. This dedication led him to open his own physical training center, where he helped countless individuals through movement, strength, and discipline. As his journey evolved, his understanding went from physical fitness to the deeper realms of the mind and spirit. Through intense self-practice and study, he gradually became a respected Yoga teacher, known for his wisdom, discipline, and compassion. By 1965, seekers from around the world were traveling to Fort Kochi to learn from him, drawn not just by his knowledge, but by his presence.
On January 18th, 1983, a new chapter began when a young student named Joseph met him and became his disciple. Under the Guru’s guidance, Joseph began walking the yogic path – a path that would shape his life and eventually give birth to what we now call Pranam Yoga Joseph.
